Four died as monsoon rains lash Karachi

At least four people died from electrocution and another drowned as heavy rains wreaked havoc on the city and inundated many roads and low-lying areas on Tuesday.
Rains which continued intermittently throughout the day exposed the working of the city’s municipal services as almost all the major thoroughfares were submerged by rainwater, causing traffic jams and immense hardship to motorists and commuters.
Target killing claims 3 more lives in Karachi

The target killing in the city is being continued unabated as three more people lost their lives on Tuesday.
According to a private TV channel, unidentified men opened indiscriminate firing on a car on Rashid Minhas Road, in which, two people were killed.
According to the police, one person received 11 bullets while another received 6 bullets and their bodies have not been identified, till filing of this report.
Two more gunned down in Karachi

At least two more persons were gunned down by unidentified armed men in two separate incidents of target killing in the city on Tuesday. According to police sources, unknown armed men shot dead a man identified as Fayyaz (24), son of Suleman Naqvi in Orangi 11 near his house and another person Naveed in Lyari area of the metropolis. The dead body of Fayyaz was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities. Meanwhile, police arrested two suspected persons in an operation against miscreants in Resala area and recovered weapons and mobile cells phones from their possession. Police in the Sadar Police Station jurisdiction raided a house located in Resala area and arrested two suspected men identified as Aafaq and Nadar. The culprits were involved in various street crimes and had snatched over dozen mobile cells phones from people. The police recovered weapons including TT pistol, rifle and eight mobile phones from their possession. Police filed cases against them and started investigation from them.
Karachi share market sheds 1pc on institutional selling

The Karachi share market fell more than one percent due to institutional selling on Monday, dealers said.
“Institutional investors’ focus remained in line with the year-ending in the absence of any good news,” said Sajid Bhanji, Vice President, Arif Habib Capital Markets. The KSE-100 Index fell 1.28 percent, or 125.30 points, to close at 9,671.55 points. The KSE-30 Index down by 1.57 percent, or 151.96 points to close at 9,510.19 points. More >
Karachi faces growing Taliban menace

Police in Pakistan’s largest city, the port of Karachi, say the Taliban are increasing in numbers and appointing new leaders.
The sprawling southern city, with its population of about 18 million, is an ideal place for militants to get lost in the crowd.
Karachi hoarding medals in Sindh Games

Karachi look set to bag the Mohenjo-Daro trophy as the region dominated the second day of the 13th Sindh Games with 19 gold medals, while Sukkur came in second with 5 and Hyderabad secured third position with 4 gold medals.
Karachi’s Almas Ibrahim won the 3000 metres race and her teammates Umema and Nazma Azhar secured first place in High Jump and Discus competitions, leaving the men to take the 400 metre relay race. Meanwhile, Sukkur emerged as the champion in the traditional sports of Kodi Kodi and Wanjwatti.
Cyclone Phet hits coastal Pakistan

Cyclone Phet lashed Karachi June 5, and heavy rains paralysed life in coastal areas and adjoining cities in Sindh and Balochistan provinces as well as damaging infrastructure before moving on Sunday.
The cyclone did not directly cause any deaths, since authorities evacuated coastal areas in time, but winds and rains caused 12 casualties in Karachi, Hyderabad and Ghotki.
Protesters baton charged in Karachi

Police on Tuesday baton charged the participants of a rally organized by Imamia Organization against Israeli aggression which was trying to reach US Consulate.
Manhandling was observed between the protestors and the police near Fawara Chowk when the police tried to stop the participants of the rally from proceed towards the US Consulate to protest against Israeli assault on aid convoy.
Baby elephants at Karachi Zoo

At a time when Pakistanis are comfortable being cruel to other human beings, it seems a bit much to ask for humane treatment of animals. The Karachi zoo recently acquired two new baby elephants. In theory, they should be better cared for at a facility that is purposebuilt for the care of animals. However, the life of zoo animals is quite miserable. Part of the problem lies in poor management and poor strategy. For instance, Emma, a black bear was moved to Karachi to save her dying species by allowing her to breed. Unfortunately, the city government forgot to provide her with a male companion.
Karachi airport stops a man with circuits
May 11th
A man was stopped at the Karachi airport after an electrical circuit and batteries were found in the soles of his shoes. The man name’s is Faiz Mohammad and he was arrested on Sunday night at the Karachi airport. His shoes triggered off an alarm at the airport, when he was going to Muscat on a Thai Airways flight. Investigators made it clear that no explosives were found with Faiz.
